Even When the Rain Falls, Our Day Continues
Seoul is in the middle of a heat wave.
The weather changes so quickly these days.
Rain suddenly turns into a heavy downpour, and then, as if nothing ever happened, the bright sunlight returns.
Sometimes I think the weather these days is just like the stock market — unpredictable, constantly changing, and impossible to guess.
But even on days like this, my husband and I always go for a walk.
Sometimes we walk for two hours, sometimes even longer.
My hobbies are simple.
Reading books, which costs almost nothing, and walking.
Actually, these days, I think I should call it running.
Whenever we go out, I always run along the path.
My husband's wheelchair follows behind me.
At first, running was not easy.
I could only run about 50 meters before I had to stop and catch my breath.
But I kept trying.
After about a month, my stamina improved little by little.
The distance I could run became longer.
Life is like that too.
Small efforts, repeated quietly like a light drizzle soaking into clothes, eventually create change.
Whenever we pass a bridge on our walk, I shamelessly place my leg on the railing and stretch.
I imagine the day when my leg will become flexible enough to stretch out straight.
For now, I can barely lift it 45 degrees.
But recently, it has reached almost 50 degrees.
It may seem like a small change to someone else.
But to me, it is a precious achievement.
That day, we went out for our usual walk.
But the sky suddenly became dark.
Without warning, a heavy rain poured down.
Thankfully, we always keep two umbrellas behind my husband's wheelchair.
With the unpredictable weather these days, we have learned to be prepared.
Many people around us had gone out without umbrellas.
For a moment, I worried.
What if the river overflowed from so much rain?
My husband also seemed nervous and stopped for a moment.
But then he took out the phone I bought him with my retirement money.
He started filming the rain.
The pouring water.
The street covered with rain.
That special moment that might never come again.
I also recorded it.
My husband's umbrella.
The sound of the rain.
The two of us standing together in the middle of an unexpected storm.
When would we ever experience a moment like this again?
Sometimes difficult moments become beautiful memories when we record them.
I cannot say my life has always been easy.
There are days when I feel exhausted.
There are moments when my body does not have enough strength.
But strangely, I still love my life.
I love it because it is not perfect.
I love it because even in difficult moments, I can find small pieces of happiness.
That day, the heavy rain surprised us.
But looking back, it became a fun and unforgettable memory.
We did not simply avoid the rain.
We experienced it together.
And that became another story of our life.
After returning home, I cleaned the house.
Dust and hair hidden under the sofa were waiting for me.
I took out an old vacuum cleaner.
I think it is more than 20 years old.
Because I did not use it often, it still works well.
And then there is the cordless vacuum cleaner.
I bought this for my husband.
When I was working, I used money from my performance bonus to buy it.
My husband told me,
"I want to clean the house while you are at work. I think a cordless vacuum would help me."
So I bought it.
Only because he wanted it.
But...
My husband never actually used it even once.
It turned out to be heavier and harder to handle than he expected.
His strength was not enough to use it alone.
So the vacuum cleaner I bought for him is now used by me.
But when I think about it, if it were not for my husband, I probably would never have bought such a thing in my entire life.
Sometimes the things we buy for the people we love become more meaningful than the things we buy for ourselves.
I often avoid things that are more complicated than necessary.
Cooking is the same.
Sometimes kitchen tools make cooking easier.
But then washing all those tools takes even more time.
So I squeeze lemons with my hands.
I cut vegetables with just a knife and a cutting board.
Even if they are not perfectly shaped, does it really matter?
As long as they taste good, that is enough.
Cleaning is the same.
The cordless vacuum is convenient sometimes.
But sometimes a simple cloth and my own hands are enough.
Living in a small home has taught me how to find happiness in small things.
I also find great happiness in the dogs I meet during our walks.
Someday, I would love to live with a dog and a cat.
But my husband does not want to raise pets, and our home is not large enough.
So the dogs I meet on the street feel like little gifts.
There is Sharon.
Her owner says Sharon is shy because she takes after her.
And there is Popo, who always walks with an elderly owner.
Popo loves people so much.
Even when I simply hold out my hand, Popo becomes excited.
Of course, I never touch someone else's dog without permission.
They are someone's precious family.
I always ask first.
"May I pet your dog?"
And only after receiving permission do I gently touch them.
The warmth of a small life brings such happiness.
One day, I saw an elderly man carefully taking care of his dog during our walk.
Watching him, I suddenly thought:
People sometimes find it difficult to do such loving things even for other people.
But with our pets, we willingly give endless love.
That is why the happiness a pet gives us is so special.
I do not have children or many friends.
Sometimes I think...
Maybe someday, I will have a little companion waiting for me.
A friend who wags its tail when it sees me.
A friend who understands my heart without words.
Will that dream come true someday?
Do you have a dog?
If you do, I truly envy you.
Today, we walk again.
Whether it rains or the sun shines,
we continue searching for our own happiness
in our imperfect but precious days.
